We took a fabulous ski hut trip February 14-17, 2018 to Francie’s Cabin, which sits near Breckenridge. Shane and Stormy met Emilie Gray, Andy Riter, Lee Derr, and Dave Conley for three days of pretty good snow and very good companionship. Here are a few photos.
“I’d better do this before I get too old!” That was my logic several months ago when I decided to commit to doing the Cathedral Traverse. The Cathedral Traverse is a climb of the three peaks that make up the Cathedral Group in the Tetons. The route starts by climbing up the East Face of Teewinot and climbing across a ridge to the top of Mt Owen. You then cross the ridge between Mt Owen and the Grand Teton. Finally you are placed to climb the Grand Teton by one of the North Ridge routes. The descent takes you off the south side of the Grand and back to your starting point through Garnet Canyon.
I was born and grew up in Evanston, Wyoming, which is about 180 miles south of the Jackson Hole. Some of my first memories are of family trips to the Tetons—we would make at least one trip to the area every year. I remember standing on top of Signal Mountain and my dad pointing out the mountains to me. The two that dominate the view are the Grand Teton and Mount Moran. Those were the two I could easily identify whenever we visited. Continue reading
In September 2014, as part of Shane’s “60th Orbit Adventures”, he organized a group of eight friends to join us to bike/drive the White Rim Trail — 100 miles of treacherous road in Canyonlands National Park. Seven of us live in Colorado Springs: Shane, Stormy, Charlie, Beth, Karen, Bill, Mary. Three traveled from the Seattle area: Val, Leslie, Eric. We gathered in Moab, Utah on Wednesday evening and began the adventure on Thursday morning. Continue reading
Two of my goals for this 60th orbit were to get to know the Teton backcountry better and ski Jackson Hole Resort’s side country. A few months ago I found out that Exum Mountain Guides offered a perfect opportunity to do this. They offer a backcountry ski week. It consists of three days of exploring the Teton backcountry, a day in the side country at Jackson Hole, and a day with an Exum guide at Snow King. This sounded great so I signed up. It was exactly what I wanted and I met some great skiing companions I hope to ski with again in the near future.
